BERLIN MARATHON

Synopsis

The Berlin Marathon began in 1974 and has grown in popularity to become one of the five marathons that make up the World Marathon Majors. Over 70 live bands, a million spectators, marathon gates and numerous other attractions provide an unbelievable atmosphere along the course. The flat course is one of the fastest in the world, running past Berlin’s famous landmarks such as the Reichstag and Berliner Dom.

In 2009 Haile Gebrselassie won his fourth Berlin Marathon. With the last pacemaker dropping out about one hour and 34 minutes into the race, Gebrselassie ran alone to the finish, arriving at the Brandenburg Gate in 2:06:08. Kenyan Francis Kiprop finished second in a personal best of 2:07:04, and Ethiopian Negari Terfa was third in 2:07:43, also a career best.

The race annually attracts more than 5 million spectators, 250 million television viewers, 300,000 applicants and 150,000 participants.
