CHICAGO MARATHON
Synopsis
Since the first Chicago Marathon in 1977, the field of runners has increased from 4,200 to nearly 45,000 which has helped establish it as one of the five World Marathon Majors. The Bank of America Chicago Marathon is a city marathon that boasts a fast and flat course which facilitates the pursuit of personal records and world record performances. The course starts in Grant Park by Lake Michigan and runs through neighbourhoods in northern Chicago and all the way to the South Side before it returns to Grant Park. In the 32 year history of the Chicago Marathon the race has been the field of many record setting and exciting battles to the finish line.
In 2009 Olympic gold medallist Sammy Wanjiru broke the course record and set the fastest men's time ever on US soil, to take home first place, crossing the finish line with a time of 2:05:41.
The previous course record was 2:05:42, set by Khalid Khannouchi in 1999. This is Wanjiru's fourth major title in five marathons. At the age of 22 years 335 days, Wanjiru is the youngest runner with three World Marathon Major victories. In the women's race, Liliya Shobukhova of Russia, won her first major title, crossing the finish line at 2:25:55.
