WORLD GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

Synopsis

The World Golf Championships are a group of four annual events created by the International Federation of PGA Tours; Accenture Match Play Championship, Cadillac Championship, Bridgestone Invitational and the WGC – HSBC Champions. These events feature some of the world’s best players, competing against each other in various formats, namely match play, stroke and team. The Official World Golf Ranking is used to ensure a strong field and the events have some of the largest purses in golf, with an excess of $1 million worth of prize money.

In 2011 Englishman Luke Donald won the Accenture Match Play Championship with a three and two triumph over Germany’s Martin Kaymer. It was the first year the final was contested in an 18-hole format. In the Cadillac Championship Nick Watney beat Dustin Johnson by two shots to claim his first World Golf Championships and became the third American to win the event, after Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. At the Bridgestone Invitational Adam Scott fought off challenges from several players by shooting a bogey free 5 under 65 to win the Championships over Rickie Fowler and Luke Donald. In the WGC-HSBC Championships Martin Kaymer won his tenth European Tour title in dramatic style, following a stunning final round 63.
