WORLD GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

Synopsis

The World Golf Championships are a group of four annual events created by the International Federation of PGA Tours; Accenture Match Play Championship, CA Championship, Bridgestone Invitational and the Omega Mission Hills World Cup. These events feature some of the world’s best players, competing against each other in various formats (match play, stroke, team). The Official World Golf Ranking is used to ensure a strong field and the events have some of the largest purses in golf, with prize money in excess of $1 million.

In 2009 Australia’s Geoff Ogilvy won his second Accenture Match Play victory in four years, and his third World Golf Championships title, defeating Paul Casey. Phil Mickelson won his first World Golf Championship at the 2009 CA Championship. Mickelson, taken to a hospital on the eve of the final round with heat exhaustion and dehydration, survived seven lead changes in 11 holes against Nick Watney before hanging on with six straight pars for a 3-under 69 and a one-shot victory. Tiger Woods became the first player in PGA Tour history to win seven times on the same golf course with his 2009 victory at the Bridgestone Invitational. Woods defeated Padraig Harrington with a memorable 8-iron from 178 years that settled inches from the pin at the signature 16-hole at Firestone.
