NEW YORK MARATHON
Synopsis
The New York City Marathon is one of the world’s most famous marathons and is an annual event that began in 1970. As one of the five World Major Marathons, it attracts elite athletes from all corners of the globe. A field of over 40,000 runners take on the 26.2 mile course, which winds its way through all five major boroughs of New York City, namely Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan. More than two million spectators line the route, which passes over five bridges and finishes in Central Park.
The 2011 New York Marathon attracted a record number of competitors and took place in near-perfect conditions. Kenya's Geoffrey Mutai produced an exhibition of speed and endurance that seemed to defy the limits of human fitness. He covered the 22nd and 23rd miles of the Marathon in a total of 9 minutes and 4 seconds, which devastated his already crumbling competition. He eventually smashed the course record with a time of two hours, five minutes and six seconds, shattering the old standard of 2:07:43 set by Ethiopia's Tesfaye Jifar in 2001. The women’s race was equally as dramatic, with Dado overtaking fading frontrunner Mary Keitany of Kenya in the final mile. Dado, a three-time Rome Marathon winner, made up a deficit of more than two minutes to win, clocking a time of 2:23:15.
