NEW YORK MARATHON
Synopsis
The New York Marathon has been held since 1970 and has grown into one of the world’s most famous marathons. As one of the five World Major Marathons (Berlin, Boston, Chicago and London being the other four), it attracts elite athletes from all corners of the globe. A field of over 40,000 runners take on the 26.2 mile course, which winds its way through all five major boroughs of New York City, namely Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan. More than two million spectators line the route, which passes over 5 bridges and finishes in Central Park.
The 2010 New York Marathon saw a record number of runners take the streets, with just over 44,000 turning out on 7th November. Gebre Gebremariam, the 2009 world cross country champion, ran with easy grace through the last hilly stretch in Central Park to pull away from Emmanuel Mutai for a comfortable win in two hours, eight minutes, 14 seconds. Mutai finished more than a minute behind the 26 year old Ethiopian, who became the first marathon debutant to win the New York race since the New Zealander Rod Dixon in 1983. Fellow countryman and world record holder Haile Gebrselassie pulled up after 16 miles with a knee injury. Kenya’s Edna Kiplagat won the women’s race in 2:28:20. Shalane Flanagan of the US and Mary Keitany of Kenya, both running their first marathons, followed Kiplagat over the finish line.
