MELBOURNE MARATHON

Synopsis

The Melbourne Marathon is a prestigious event, attracting competitors from all over the world. Elite athletes and everyday runners, including the renowned Spartan athletes, run alongside one another through the city of Melbourne. The Spartans are runners who have competed in ten or more Melbourne Marathons and the title of Spartan has now become one of the Melbourne running community's most sought after awards. The Spartans are recognized today by their distinctive green, blue, red, gold, black and maroon running singlets as well as their own personalized race number. The black vests are worn by the Spartan legends who have completed every Melbourne Marathon since the beginning in 1978. The singlet is worn with the upmost pride by all Spartans as a sign of their achievement and dedication to marathon running. Club records show a total of 1,153 runners have qualified as Spartans over the past 33 years. The 2012 event celebrates its 35th anniversary.

The 2011 race saw Kenya’s Japhet Kipkorir race to victory in two hours, 11 minutes and 12 seconds, just eight seconds slower than the course record he set last year. His compatriot Irene Mogaka won the women's event in a time of two hours, 35 minutes and 12 seconds. The race attracted over 27,000 participants, who competed on the largely flat and incredibly picturesque route through parks, along the St Kilda waterfront and finishing with a lap of the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
