Synopsis
Founded in 1886, The International Rugby Board (IRB) is the world governing body for the sport of rugby union. The IRB is responsible for the management of the major international rugby union competitions, including The Rugby World Cup (RWC) which is one of the world’s greatest sporting events. The IRB is also responsible for the management of The Rugby World Cup Sevens and The Women’s Rugby World Cup.
The inaugural Rugby World Cup took place in 1987, with the hosts New Zealand winning The Webb Ellis Trophy. The RWC is held every four years and guarantees top class and dramatic rugby matches. Some of the game’s greatest stars have taken part in The RWC over the years, including David Kirk, John Kirwan, Serge Blanco, David Campese, Tim Horan, Sean Fitzpatrick, John Eales, Gavin Hastings, Jeremy Guscott, Jonah Lomu, Francois Pienaar, George Gregan, Jonny Wilkinson, Martin Johnson, Keith Wood, Rupeni Caucaunibuca, Sebastian Chabal, Shane Williams, Brian O'Driscoll and Bryan Habana.
The Rugby World Cup Sevens (The Melrose Cup) is held every four years and also features some of the world’s best players, including Waisale Serevi, Marika Vunibaka, Lawrence Dallaglio and Eric Rush. Additionally, The Women’s Rugby World Cup takes place every four years and the growing popularity of this event is testament to the successful spread of women's rugby around the globe.
